15th-16th Century Persian Taj

Introduction

As I’ve started focusing more on making hats, it only made sense that if I was going to wear my Persian garb (more layers!) to Winter Crown, I should make myself a hat to go with it. This was a very simple build, sewn entirely by hand the night before and morning of the event.

Materials

The hat base is Pellon’s 71F Peltex, a very sturdy iron on stabilizer. This stuff defies gravity in a serious way. It’s less pointy than plastic canvas and doesn’t need a mulling layer. The covering and lining fabric is silk dupioni, and the ties are a strip of polyester taffeta from my first attempt at this veil layer.

The veil underlayer is an old white polyester scarf, a piece of woven cotton trim, ribbon ties, and a vintage pearl necklace.

Notes on Construction

As this was a very last-minute project, unfortunately I didn’t take any pictures of the construction. In short, I covered the Peltex interlining with the outside dupioni, sewed down the ribbon ties, then slip-stitiched the lining, turning under the edges.

When I first wore this, I balanced my veil and veil band and pinned on the pearls, but this time I took inspiration from Mistress Jadi of Meridies and sewed them all together in one piece.

I need to redo the pearls on the veil band at some point – the necklace I used was very old and I suspect the thread is fragile, but so far I’ve enjoyed how easy it is to wear!
